Which FC Dallas players are flying under the radar before 2021?
The season is getting closer and closer week by week. Can you taste it? Do you order your powder blue kit? Are you excited about the potential of this team with a mix of qualified veterans and promising youngsters?
I’m sure we’ll see some of the big new faces like Jader Obrian and Freddy Vargas and how they could impact down the line. Likewise, we expect great things from Paxton Pomykal, Matt Hedges and Andres Ricaurte.
But does anyone go unnoticed and up for something special?
Here are some names to consider.
The right rear spot is in the air. Reggie Cannon and Bryan Reynolds are now ready to ply their trade in Europe, and as we discussed earlier, the tempting idea is to move Ryan Hollingshead to that position and let John Nelson step in from the left-back. It’s not a bad idea, and I’m sure we’ll see this setup at some point in the season.
But Eddie Munjoma won number 2 and is also set to compete for long minutes at right-back. The good news is he made quite a few appearances with North Texas Soccer Club last season. The coaches had the chance to work with him. He has a good mix of college and USL League One experience, so if anyone’s willing to bring their athleticism to help this team, it’s him. I think Eddie probably sits between Reggie and Bryan when it comes to skill and style. He’s quick and attacking, but certainly has more experience as a pure defender than Reynolds.
Is his ceiling as high as either of these two? It probably doesn’t matter. If he can jump in and make a difference in games, expect another European team to come and sniff the Frisco right-back factory.
Munjoma is still a stranger, so he flies a bit under the radar. Really, there is no guarantee that he will land the starting position, but my hunch is that we will see him sooner rather than later.
In the fall, Thomas joined his friends on their video podcast and dropped many clues about his frustration at Frisco. He felt like it was time to get more shots in the first team or even a loan opportunity abroad. The young attacking midfielder spent time at Hybernia in Scotland and apparently did quite well, but the expected loan never came to fruition.
We have been waiting for a while for this promising youngster to land a role in the first team. Thomas was a mainstay of North Texas SC, but you can tell he was probably playing at a lower level than he needed to be. Yet even from his limited first-team minutes, you could see there was still a lot of growth needed, especially for him to find ways to make an impact on the game. Roberts is highly rated. , so it looks like it’s now or never if he’s going to break through.
With the Olympics and international calls impacting the squad, there’s reason to think this could be a solid first half of the season for Roberts. A lot of players will miss minutes, opening up opportunities for guys like him. The central midfielder will certainly be filled with great veterans in contention for minutes, but a creative substitute on the bench gives him a role to play. Hopefully it becomes a 2021 surprise story for FC Dallas.
This one is a bit of a hit in the dark, but while Jimmy Maurer is undoubtedly the No.1 of the season, don’t count on an athletic young goalkeeper like Megiolaro making things interesting. If FC Dallas believes in this kid and his potential, then you have to find a few minutes for him. Maybe he gets a few with North Texas SC early on, but if Maurer takes a hit or struggles, Megiolaro might have a chance to show if he can deliver athleticism that will complement FC’s approach. Dallas.
FC Dallas have shown in the past that they can win and be comfortable with a young goaltender who will experience ups and downs and grow in position. Could Phelipe be the next decent young phenomenon? Would it be a great season to see what he can offer with a mostly veteran backline ahead of him?
Phelipe is well under the radar, but I like the chances of seeing something from him this season.
What do you think? Who else goes unnoticed and might just have the chance to make a name for themselves this season?
